Shifting Global Views: US Perceptions Plummet While China Rises

An annual survey shows that global perceptions of the United States have worsened over the past year, now trailing behind China. Factors contributing to this decline include decisions made by President Trump, such as trade wars and foreign policy approaches. China, conversely, has experienced rising global views.

Global perceptions of the United States have substantially declined over the last year, now ranking worse than China's, as revealed by a recent study on democratic values released on Monday. The study, commissioned by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, highlights a continued shift in global opinion.

According to Alliance founder Anders Fogh Rasmussen, President Trump's foreign and economic strategies, including tariff implementations and controversial foreign relations, are key reasons for this downward trend. Though Trump aims to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia, these efforts have not reversed global sentiments.

The Democracy Perception Index, surveying over 111,000 people globally, reports the U.S. receiving a net perception rating of -5%, a sharp decline from +22% last year. In contrast, China's perception improved, climbing to +14% from +5%, indicating a shift in global opinion ahead of the Copenhagen Democracy Summit.
