In a bold move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has pressed for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week in Istanbul. Zelenskiy claims that any progress toward peace hinges on Putin's agreement to the talks, alleging that Putin is hesitant about a face-to-face meeting.
Zelenskiy emphasized the necessity of direct communication with Putin, stating, "Everything in Russia depends on him." He believes that if Putin commits to ceasefire discussions, it could pave the way for broader negotiations to end the ongoing war.
Before attempting talks with Putin, Zelenskiy is scheduled to meet Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian leader has invited U.S. President Donald Trump to join the discussions, as Trump expressed interest while traveling in the region. China's support for a 30-day ceasefire provides additional diplomatic weight to Zelenskiy's proposal.
