Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Monday denounced the West Bengal government under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the escalating crime against women, following reports of an alleged gang rape of a law student on her college grounds in Kolkata. Speaking to ANI, Majumdar noted the occurrence of two prominent cases within eight months, including the RG Kar incident and the recent assault at a South Kolkata law college.

Emphasizing this alarming trend, Majumdar remarked on the government's inaction despite a female chief minister. He pointed out a previous case involving a disabled girl assaulted in Barrackpore and accused Mamata Banerjee of remaining silent. In response, BJP's national president JP Nadda has formed a fact-finding team, led by key party figures, to investigate and report back on these incidents.

Majumdar further criticized the state government's alleged erosion of democracy, claiming the police force operates as a cadre of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Accusing TMC leaders of making derogatory remarks against women, he suggested that the internal discord within the party mirrors its broader inability to ensure safety in Bengal, predicting public rejection of TMC in the 2026 elections.
