The opposition Congress party has criticized the government following US President Donald Trump's assertion that India will not significantly purchase oil from Russia. Trump's public statements on India's policy have marked his fourth pronouncement in less than a week.
Congress took a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the prime minister avoids disclosing pertinent information which Trump reveals. Trump's comments came in the wake of a conversation with Modi, where he extended Diwali greetings.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that while Modi confirmed the Diwali greetings call from Trump, it was the US President who divulged details about India's oil import strategy, stating that India has assured to cut back on Russian oil imports. This development adds tension to an already complex US-India relationship strained by trade tariff disagreements.
