Peruvian Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez requested the Congress on Wednesday for authority to utilize legislative powers for 90 days aimed at addressing security challenges faced by the nation.

Alvarez presented this request while detailing the government plan led by President Jose Jeri, who recently assumed office following the impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte. In his address to Congress, where a confidence vote for new cabinets is customary, Alvarez stated, "The government views security as a matter of state."

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the new government declaring a 30-day state of emergency in both Lima and the adjoining province of Callao as measures to curb escalating crime rates.
