Former Union minister and veteran Congress leader Sriprakash Jaiswal passed away in Kanpur at the age of 81 due to a cardiac arrest. Initially treated at a local nursing home, he was moved to the Cardiology Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Jaiswal, who was married to Maya Rani Jaiswal and is survived by his children and grandchildren, was deeply embedded in Kanpur throughout his life. He served as Minister of State for Home Affairs and later held the coal ministry post during the UPA government, influential in the political scene of Uttar Pradesh.
His political journey began early with his election as Kanpur Mayor in 1989, later serving multiple terms as a Lok Sabha MP. Known for advocating on international issues, such as concerning Indian students in Australia, Jaiswal was an active figure even after his 2014 electoral defeat, leaving a substantial legacy in both politics and community service.
