The Renaming Controversy: BJP and Congress Clash Over Rural Jobs Scheme
The BJP has defended the renaming of MGNREGA, claiming it aims to change the scheme's 'spirit' rather than its title. The political battle over the renaming of a rural job guarantee scheme has intensified, with the BJP asserting that the move was meant to change the scheme's 'spirit' rather than solely its name. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized Congress for its sense of entitlement regarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
On Friday, the Union Cabinet approved renaming MGNREGA as 'Poojya Bapu Grameen Rozgar Yojna', sparking opposition from Congress. Congress representatives, including Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal, condemned the government's action, accusing it of seeking credit for the scheme while previously calling it a failure.
Trivedi argued that changing the names of landmarks, such as 'Kingsway' to 'Rajpath', has historically shifted the cultural connotations associated with these places. The BJP maintains that the renaming embodies the spirit of public service, unlike the allegedly royal demeanor of Congress initiatives.
