In a stern critique of ongoing demolition activities at Varanasi's historic Manikarnika Ghat, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra labelled the actions as a 'grave sin' against India's cultural heritage.

Gandhi's criticism, aired in a post on social media, accused the authorities of sacrificing the ghat's historical significance for commercial gain, camouflaged under the pretext of renovation. She emphasized the regenerational project masks commercial greed, systematically dismantling cherished religious sites cherished for centuries.

The project, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and costing around Rs 17.56 crore, aims to modernize Manikarnika Ghat by enhancing facilities, easing access for pilgrims, and introducing new features like VIP seating and a wood plaza for cremation rituals. The administration plans to broaden the area from Manikarnika to Scindia Ghat, promising better connectivity and basic amenities.
