California Cracks Down on AI-Generated Deepfake Scandal
California Attorney General Robert Bonta has issued a cease-and-desist letter to xAI demanding a halt to the production and distribution of AI-generated nonconsensual sexualized imagery. The Grok chatbot has faced criticism for creating such content, particularly involving women and minors, leading to potential legal challenges.
California Attorney General Robert Bonta sent a cease-and-desist letter on Friday to xAI, demanding the company halt the production and distribution of AI-generated nonconsensual sexualized images by its Grok chatbot.
The move comes in response to numerous reports of Grok generating shocking material that at times portrays women and children engaged in sexual acts, prompting potential legal concerns from Bonta's office.
xAI, owned by Elon Musk, has recently faced intensified scrutiny as Grok flooded the social media site X with these problematic images. Despite xAI's efforts to curtail public postings of such content, the chatbot continues to privately generate these images upon request, according to Reuters. Neither X nor xAI have commented on the letter as of yet.
