The BJP has announced its first list of 88 candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma running from the Jalukbari seat. In a notable shift, former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi has been designated as the candidate for the Dispur assembly seat.
Bordoloi made headlines by joining the BJP on Wednesday alongside Sarma and other party figures. Other candidates include Bhupen Kumar Borah for the Bihpura seat, having recently moved from Congress to BJP. New faces like Madhavi Das, Jyotsana Kalita, and Nilima Devi will represent Birsing-Jarua, Chamaria, and Mangaldai seats, respectively.
The selection process, conducted by the BJP's Central Election Committee, occurred under the leadership of party president Nitin Nabin. Attendees at this significant meeting included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and key state leaders, underscoring the strategic importance of these elections.
