Electoral Earthquake: BJP's Unexpected Gains in West Bengal's Muslim-Dominated Districts
The BJP's recent election victory in West Bengal has notably included unexpected wins in Muslim-majority districts like Murshidabad, Malda, and Uttar Dinajpur, where the TMC previously held sway. The fractured Muslim vote, previously consolidated in favor of the TMC, shifted the balance of power across key districts.

The BJP's electoral triumph in West Bengal has upended long-standing political assumptions, particularly in districts with significant Muslim populations like Murshidabad, Malda, and Uttar Dinajpur. Historically, these areas have been strongholds for the TMC, due to a near-total consolidation of the Muslim vote.
However, the recent elections have seen this voting pattern splinter, allowing the BJP to make substantial gains. Of 43 assembly seats across the three districts, the BJP has increased its presence from eight seats in 2021 to 19, while the TMC's seat count declined from 35 to 22. This shift highlights a broader fragmentation of the minority vote, contradicting the anticipated consolidation following the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
This fragmentation extends beyond these districts, affecting South 24 Parganas and Birbhum, where the BJP also made noteworthy strides. For the TMC, once a central opponent to the BJP, this election signals that its historically reliable voter base is no longer monolithic, with the potential to reshape West Bengal's political landscape.
