Former Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim has commended India's democratic robustness after the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) substantial electoral wins in West Bengal and Assam. Solheim criticized Western media outlets for mischaracterizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a democratic threat, urging them to appreciate the Indian democratic system.
Highlighting the high voter turnout in West Bengal, a region larger than any European nation, Solheim remarked that turnout exceeded 90 percent, far surpassing participation rates in Europe and the US. He asserted that India should be viewed as an inspiration amidst challenges facing US and European democracies.
Additionally, Solheim acknowledged the significant political shift in Tamil Nadu as voters elected cinema superstar Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, marking a historic electoral debut. Solheim extended support for the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, underlining India's blend of cinematic and political narratives.
