The factions within the AIADMK, separated for nearly two weeks, announced a reunification on Wednesday. The rebel faction, led by S P Velumani, emphasized that there wasn't an official split but a divergence of perspectives among party members, with some pledging support to Edappadi K Palaniswami while others aligned with the Shanmugam-Velumani group.
Velumani, accompanied by several MLAs, met with party leader Palaniswami at his residence, affirming their backing for him as general secretary. Despite C Ve Shanmugam's absence, Velumani insisted on his support, highlighting their earlier meeting at Shanmugam's office. In subsequent discussions, Velumani refuted allegations of partisan maneuvering during the TVK government's May 13 confidence vote.
Following their assembly with Palaniswami, Velumani, with key political ally Dr C Vijayabaskar and others, brought a unified letter to Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar. This document retracted previous requests for separate party recognition, signifying an end to internal disputes. The Speaker is expected to make a decision on these submissions soon.
Speaking with reporters, Velumani firmly stated that media portrayals of an AIADMK split were exaggerated, reiterating the party's collective resolve in overcoming earlier challenges. Velumani disclosed that Edappadi K Palaniswami agreed to assess the party's performance and address the reasons behind their recent election loss.
