The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made significant strides in the recent civic elections in Himachal Pradesh, clinching major victories in Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan municipal corporations. However, the Congress Party retained control over the Palampur Municipal Corporation in a fiercely contested election.
The elections held on May 17 were crucial as they served as a litmus test for the upcoming assembly elections in 2027. These local body elections involved approximately 15 percent of the state's electorate, with results declared on Sunday showing the BJP's decisive edge over Congress in three of the four areas.
Out of the 63 seats contested, the BJP won 37, Congress secured 23, and Independent candidates captured three. Each victory was hailed by BJP leaders as a testament to their public support, describing the results as a verdict against the state government's policies.
Despite Congress's hold in Palampur, where they won 11 out of 15 seats, criticism from the BJP was vocal. State president Rajiv Bindal claimed the election results were a clear rejection of the Congress government's leadership under Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
