Russia Tightens Grip: Trade Warnings and Sanctions Foreshadow Armenia’s EU Ambitions

Russia is escalating its trade restrictions on Armenia as the latter seeks stronger ties with the West. The increase in sanctions and warnings, including threats to suspend gas, oil, and diamond supplies, highlights Russia's efforts to maintain influence over Armenia, which is being pulled towards the European Union.

Russia is ramping up economic pressure on Armenia ahead of a pivotal June 7 election, with the traditionally close ally now seeking deeper ties with Brussels and Washington. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has publicly criticized Moscow while steering Armenia towards the West.

Trade restrictions and warnings from Russia have intensified in the lead-up to the vote. Pashinyan's Civil Contract party, facing an array of pro-Russian opposition voices, is at the center of this geopolitical tug-of-war. Gas, oil, and diamond supplies from Russia are at risk of being suspended should Armenia persist in its bid to join the European Union.

Russia's Eurasian Economic Union has warned it might consider suspending Armenia for seeking EU membership. Such a move could severely impact Armenia's economy, where Russia accounts for about 35% of its foreign trade, compared to the EU's 11%. Alongside these threats, Russia has imposed temporary bans on various Armenian exports, citing safety and compliance concerns.
