Russian President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in a private meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, described by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as 'good and friendly'. This meeting took place in Moscow, within the Kremlin's walls, yet details about the discussions remain undisclosed.
The session underscores numerous informal contacts between Russian officials and other international figures, though not all are publicly acknowledged. Schroeder, who served as Germany's Chancellor from 1998 to 2005, maintains close ties with Putin, having worked with Russian state companies after his tenure.
Despite Putin's inclination for Schroeder's involvement in negotiating European security, EU foreign ministers rejected this, arguing such roles could lead to conflicts of interest. Meanwhile, Ushakov hinted at continued diplomatic engagements, particularly involving U.S. envoys focusing on foreign issues including those in Iran and Ukraine.
