Democracy at Risk: Congress Decries Rejection of RS Nominee

Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat accused the BJP of undermining democracy by rejecting Meenakshi Natarajan's Rajya Sabha nomination. The Congress claims the decision is politically motivated and lacks legal grounding. The party has now turned to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the allegedly biased rejection.

The Congress Party has launched an aggressive critique against the BJP following the dismissal of its candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination. Accusing the ruling party of 'brutally killing' democracy, Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat compared the situation unfavorably to procedures followed in other states, citing legality and fairness concerns.

Bhagat voiced his criticism, noting that Natarajan’s nomination was denied despite the absence of FIRs or criminal cases against her. This rejection was made by the Returning Officer for Madhya Pradesh's Rajya Sabha seat, prompting a delegation of Congress members to approach the Election Commission for redress.

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi labeled the rejection as 'perverse,' alleging that it contravenes the Representation of the People Act by dismissing the candidate before any official cognizance of a criminal matter. Congress views the denial as a political maneuver to ensure BJP dominance, sparking current legal challenges in the Supreme Court.
