Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is witnessing significant advancements in the civil aviation sector. The state government is making concerted efforts to enhance air connectivity by initiating the development of new airports and expanding existing ones. According to the latest Civil Aviation Department report, major progress has been documented in the airport projects at Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur, Aligarh, Moradabad, and Shravasti.
With the increase in flights at Gorakhpur Airport, the state government has approved a plan for a new civil terminal. A memorandum of understanding was executed in June 2025 between the Uttar Pradesh government, the Airports Authority of India, and the Ministry of Defence, facilitating the transfer of 42.14 acres from the Air Force. Presently, Gorakhpur Airport serves an average of 12 flights daily. Simultaneously, Agra Airport's new terminal is about 60% complete, following the acquisition of 144.5 acres of land.
Kanpur Airport has already seen a new terminal developed at an estimated cost of ₹150 crore, inaugurated by CM Adityanath. While four flights currently operate from this airport, additional land is being considered for further expansion. Additionally, Aligarh Airport's major expansion is in progress with ₹738.60 crore sanctioned for land acquisition. Meanwhile, the development of Moradabad and Shravasti airports, completed last year, continues with technical and land acquisition discussions aimed at further expansion.
The overarching aim of these developments is to enhance air connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, thereby boosting tourism, industry, investments, and employment. These strategic investments in civil aviation are poised to drive economic growth and regional development throughout the state.
