UPDATE 1-U.S., UK bond stronger than one individual -State Dept
- Country:
- United Kingdom
The United States and the United Kingdom have a "special relationship" that is bigger than any one person, the State Department said on Wednesday following the British ambassador's resignation after critical comments by President Donald Trump.
"The United States and the United Kingdom share a bond that is bigger than any individual, and we look forward to continuing that partnership. We remain committed to the U.S.-UK Special Relationship and our shared global agenda," a State Department spokeswoman said. British Ambassador Kim Darroch quit on Wednesday after memos from him describing the Trump administration as inept were leaked to a British newspaper, infuriating the U.S. president, who launched a Twitter attack on both the envoy and outgoing British prime minister Theresa May.
Trump said he would sever ties with the "very stupid" Darroch and called May "foolish." Darroch said the situation "is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like."
