In a grim statistic, Maharashtra witnessed 1,267 farmer suicides within the first six months of 2023, according to state government data. The Amravati division, part of the Vidarbha region, recorded the highest number of deaths at 557.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar followed with 430 deaths, while Nashik, Nagpur, and Pune divisions reported 137, 130, and 13 deaths respectively. The coastal Konkan division reported no farmer suicides.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) highlighted Maharashtra as accounting for 37.6% of all farmer suicides in India for 2022. Out of 11,290 farming-related suicides last year, 5,207 were farmers or cultivators, and 6,083 were agricultural labourers, making up 6.6% of total suicides in the country.
