The Kerala government on Wednesday announced it will reduce building permit fees by up to 60% statewide.

Previously, buildings up to 80 square meters were exempt from permit fees. Under the new rates, homes between 81 and 300 square meters will see at least a 50% reduction in fees, according to Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) Minister M B Rajesh.

Within Corporation limits, fees for homes between 81 and 150 square meters will be reduced by 60%, starting August 1. In village panchayats, the fee will drop from Rs 50 to Rs 150 per square meter, while in municipalities, it will reduce from Rs 70 to Rs 35, and in corporations, from Rs 100 to Rs 40.

This decision is historic, lowering the already lowest building permit fee in the country in light of public demand, the Minister explained.

Additionally, a 5% rebate will be granted for property taxes paid within the first month of the financial year, another first for the state.
