A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall from a tropical storm struck Yuelin Village in central China's Hunan province on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 12 people and injuries to six others. The landslide hit a residential house in Hengyang city around 8 am.
The calamity washed away a portion of the house, burying 18 individuals. While 12 bodies have been recovered, six survivors have been transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Over 240 rescuers have been mobilized to aid in the rescue efforts, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
This event is part of a series of extreme weather occurrences China has faced this summer, including flash floods in the north and southwest. Although the cyclonic winds from Gaemi, downgraded from a typhoon, had mostly subsided by late July, forecasters continue to warn of potential flooding in water-saturated areas.
