Godrej Properties Limited, a leading real estate developer in India, has partnered with the Chikkaballapur City Municipal Council (CMC) and the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) to address waste management challenges in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. This initiative, known as the City-Farmer Partnership project, aims to promote the scientific management of solid waste.
The project converts organic wet waste into valuable compost for farmers, with approximately 759 tonnes of legacy waste semi-processed and given to 109 farmers across 17 villages. To encourage organic farming, the compost, derived from 1,000 cubic meters of waste, was provided at no cost. Additionally, over 569 tonnes of segregated wet waste have been processed with the involvement of 81 farmers.
Godrej Properties focuses on building a symbiotic relationship between urban and rural communities. To educate farmers and stakeholders on sustainable waste management, IIHS conducted training sessions for over 100 farmers and 45 CMC staff members. These sessions emphasized the importance of segregated waste collection and transportation.
Ward-level and feedback meetings were held under the City-Farmer Partnership to promote waste segregation at the source. These meetings included CMC officials, the IIHS project team, Anganwadi workers, volunteers, and about 50 residents from each ward. Street plays and a road show were also organized to spread awareness about waste separation among citizens and commercial establishments.
Chief Design and Sustainability Officer of Godrej Properties Ltd., Rohit Mohan, highlighted the significant challenges in urban waste management and stressed the importance of community engagement and sustainable practices. Godrej Properties has been making strides in diverting waste from landfills and achieving Net Zero Waste to Landfill status.
