North Korea had earlier reported the rescue of over 5,000 people stranded in Sinuiju city and Uiju town following the swelling of a river on the Chinese border. Specific damages and casualty figures were not initially disclosed.
Kim Jong Un, in a Politburo meeting in Sinuiju, called for stringent punishment for negligent officials and announced plans to build 4,400 new homes and reinforce embankments. Urgent relief materials have been dispatched to aid the affected residents.
