Monsoon Devastation: Pakistan Grapples with Deadly Floods

The death toll from six weeks of monsoon rains in Pakistan has risen to 156, with over 1,800 homes damaged. Flash floods have affected multiple provinces, damaging orchards, causing landslides, and prompting relief efforts. The ongoing rains are expected to continue until next Monday.

Pakistan's death toll from nearly six weeks of torrential monsoon rains has escalated to 156, authorities reported on Thursday, as heavy downpours persisted, flooding several villages and triggering landslides across the country.

Since the monsoon season began on July 1, more than 1,800 homes have been damaged, according to the National Disaster Management Authority. The southwestern Baluchistan province saw significant orchard damage, while the eastern city of Lahore experienced severe street flooding.

Officials attribute the increased severity of recent monsoon seasons to climate change. In 2022, climate-induced rains caused massive flooding that submerged one-third of Pakistan, resulted in 1,739 deaths, and $30 billion in damages. This year, the Pakistan-administered region of Kashmir has also suffered heavy rains and landslides.

Most of the 156 fatalities have been reported in the eastern Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Nearly 300 individuals have sustained injuries. Current relief efforts include providing free food and medical care, with more than 2,000 people housed in relief camps in the southern Sindh province. Weather forecasters predict continued rainfall until next Monday.

The International Rescue Committee has announced plans to scale up its humanitarian response. "Our priority is to ensure that affected communities receive timely and adequate support to prevent this humanitarian crisis from deepening," stated Shabnam Baloch, the group's director in Pakistan.
