Hurricane Ernesto Hits Bermuda with Ferocity

Hurricane Ernesto, a Category 2 storm, struck Bermuda with heavy rains and winds, causing coastal flooding and power outages. As Ernesto moves towards Newfoundland, officials urge preparedness. The storm also affected Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, leaving many without power. The Atlantic hurricane season continues to pose significant threats.

Hurricane Ernesto began pounding Bermuda late Friday, bringing heavy winds and rain. Officials in the British territory had already opened shelters and closed government offices in anticipation of the storm.

The Category 2 hurricane is packing winds of up to 100 mph (155 kph) and is moving northeast at 13 mph (20 kph). According to the National Hurricane Centre, Ernesto's eye is expected to pass very close to or over Bermuda by early Saturday morning, causing significant coastal flooding. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” the agency warned.

Bermuda officials suspended public transportation and closed the airport on Friday night in preparation for the storm. National Security Minister Michael Weeks cautioned residents about dangerous weather conditions, with more than 14% of customers already without power. Similar dangerous surf and rip currents are expected in the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Atlantic Canada in the coming days. Ernesto was also forecast to be near Newfoundland by Monday night.
