Monsoon Devastation: Pakistan Faces Fatal Flooding Amidst Heavy Rains

Recent monsoon rains have triggered flash floods in Pakistan, causing significant damage and loss of life. Since July 1, 209 fatalities have been reported. The ongoing downpours have led to the evacuation of affected people, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of transportation. Neighboring Afghanistan has also faced similar challenges.

Flash floods, instigated by recent monsoon rains, have inundated streets in southern Pakistan and blocked vital highways in the north, officials confirmed Monday, raising the death toll from rain-related incidents to 209 since July 1.

Irfan Ali from Punjab's disaster management authority reported 14 deaths in the region within the last 24 hours. Pakistan's monsoon season, which runs from July through September, has increasingly seen severe weather attributed to climate change.

Numerous fatalities have been recorded in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh provinces. The intensity of this year's monsoon is less severe than the 2022 deluge that affected one-third of the country and caused 1,739 deaths and USD 30 billion in damages. Senior meteorologist Zaheer Ahmed Babar stated that heavy rains would persist this week, particularly affecting the Sukkur district in Sindh province, prompting evacuations. Efforts to clear the rain-blocked Karakorum highway and provide aid continue despite further forecasts of rain.
