Protest Erupts in Guwahati Over Century-Old Trees

The felling of century-old trees in Guwahati to make way for a flyover has sparked an outcry among locals and eminent personalities. On Tuesday, residents took to the streets, condemning the BJP-led Assam government's decision to cut down these trees, some over 200 years old, by the Dighalipukhuri tank.

Protesters have filed a petition with the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, urging judicial intervention to protect what they consider vital for the environment's welfare. The planned construction of a four-lane, 5.05 km long flyover, stretching from Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati, comes with an estimated cost of Rs 852.68 crore. It is set to be operational by 2026.

Bollywood actor Adil Hussain, who is from Assam, expressed his disappointment on social media, emphasizing that development should not come at the cost of environmental destruction. High-profile advocates, authors, and poets have joined the opposition, stressing the importance of preserving Guwahati's natural and historical heritage.
