Transport Secretary Reverses Biden's Climate Policy
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has rescinded two memos from the Biden administration that focused on climate change and equity in infrastructure projects, citing conflicts with Congressional intent of the 2021 $1 trillion infrastructure law. The department aims to return to foundational infrastructure priorities.
In a significant policy shift, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy annulled two Biden-era memos emphasizing climate change and equity in infrastructure initiatives. The memos, which were meant to fortify infrastructure against climate impacts while including diverse groups in project planning, have been declared incompatible with the original objectives of Congress.
Duffy stated that the Department of Transportation is now focusing on essential infrastructure development aimed at facilitating safe transportation of people and goods. The previous administration had allocated $830 million to enhance infrastructure resilience in the face of climate change.
Additionally, Duffy announced the withdrawal of a rule requiring states to track and reduce vehicle greenhouse gas emissions nationwide, further dismantling climate-related regulations from Biden's tenure.
