In a move to enhance disaster preparedness, Morocco has announced a substantial investment of 7 billion dirhams ($760 million) aimed at establishing storage platforms countrywide. This initiative comes as a direct response to the September 2023 earthquake that tragically claimed over 2,900 lives in the High Atlas Mountains.
Morocco has been plagued by a series of natural calamities including flash floods, wildfires, cold spells, and droughts over recent years. With a focus on mitigating such crises, the nation plans to allocate 2 billion dirhams towards constructing 36 new storage facilities, spanning a combined area of 240 hectares.
The project also sets aside 5 billion dirhams for emergency supplies like tents, beds, and water purification systems. These resources are designed to bolster response efforts against a variety of threats including floods, landslides, and chemical hazards.
