Researchers from Mizoram University have uncovered a new species of snake named Smithophis laptofasciatus. This finding adds to the global count of Smithophis species, now totaling five.
The discovery was made during herpetological expeditions, with DNA analysis revealing differences from previously known species. Professor H T Lalremsanga, leading the Zoology Department, stated that the research has been published in 'Taprobanica'.
Smithophis laptofasciatus is non-venomous and thrives in dense forests, primarily feeding on worms. This contributes to the biodiversity understanding in India's Northeast and its neighboring regions, where this snake species predominantly resides.
