The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, has announced a novel approach to addressing Bengaluru's garbage issue by introducing black soldier flies for composting. Speaking in the Assembly, Shivakumar emphasized the potential of this method to manage waste effectively and curb the notorious 'garbage mafia' in the city.
Shivakumar, also in charge of Bengaluru development, plans to review existing laws and propose changes aimed at shutting down operations perpetuated by this mafia. His remarks came in response to Doddaballapur BJP MLA Dheeraj Muniraju, who opposed reopening a closed waste plant in his constituency.
The experimental use of black soldier flies has shown promise in Mangaluru, and Shivakumar is considering replicating it in Bengaluru. He also assured the usage of the latest technology at new waste processing plants to manage the city's 8,000 tonnes of garbage scientifically, generating gas and power from waste.
