Russia's Humanitarian Aid Mission to Sri Lanka Post-Cyclone
Russia has dispatched 35 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The disaster killed 635 people and impacted 10% of the population. Critical infrastructure and key agricultural sectors like rice and tea were damaged, with recovery costs potentially reaching $7 billion.
In a humanitarian gesture, Russia has sent a plane carrying 35 tonnes of aid to Sri Lanka, following the havoc unleashed by Cyclone Ditwah. Shobini Gunasekera, Colombo's ambassador to Moscow, confirmed the aid is en route.
The cyclone, deemed Sri Lanka's deadliest natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami, took 635 lives and affected approximately 10% of the nation. It inflicted severe damage on essential infrastructure and vital agricultural sectors, including rice and tea.
Local authorities have warned that the overall recovery costs could soar to as much as $7 billion, further burdening the island nation's economy.
