IIT-Kharagpur's Green Leap: Waste to Wealth Conversion

IIT-Kharagpur has inked an agreement with Oil India Limited to set up a compressed biogas plant. This collaboration aims to convert campus biodegradable waste into clean energy and organic manure, tackling urban challenges like waste management, greenhouse emissions, and soil health.
The initiative, revealed at India Energy Week in Goa, is set to turn IIT-Kharagpur into a living laboratory for circular economy and waste-to-wealth innovation. By merging scientific research with practical implementation, the project will foster new research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Director Suman Chakraborty expressed that this initiative is a holistic, scalable model to transform waste management in urban regions across India and the global south, offering clean energy, economic benefits, and innovative solutions.
