At least 10 individuals have lost their lives across Kenya due to intense rains that have caused flooding and landslides in multiple regions, according to police sources. Authorities have issued warnings of rising river levels that could pose a threat to communities downstream from a significant hydropower dam system.
In eastern Kenya, seven deaths were reported, while police indicated damage to two bridges in Kwale and Kitui counties. Landslides were noted in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet county in the Rift Valley region, disrupting transport when a landslide blocked the Iten–Kabarnet road. Repairs are underway, and traffic is being redirected, as confirmed by the Kenya National Highways Authority.
In Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross reported unverified cases of missing individuals and stranded households in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. They are currently providing relief services. The interior ministry has also placed the lower Tana River basin on high alert, citing increased reservoir inflows within the Seven Forks dam system, heightening flood risks downstream. The Tana River Delta, hosting over 100,000 residents, is potentially in jeopardy, the ministry noted.
