The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Odisha is likely to experience lower than usual rainfall during this year's monsoon season, spanning from June to September. This weather pattern is attributed to the El Nino phenomenon.

IMD's Bhubaneswar Centre Director, Manorama Mohanty, highlighted that while northern and western parts of the state may see reduced rainfall, southern and central areas could receive normal or above-normal precipitation. Temperatures in Odisha are expected to hover between 41°C and 43°C in the coming days.

The weather department has issued an 'orange warning' for several districts including Sundargarh and Jharsuguda, cautioning against thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 70 km/h. Meanwhile, a 'yellow warning' has been sounded for other regions, urging residents to remain alert as storms have already impacted areas like Sonepur and Sundargarh, causing substantial damage to infrastructure and homes.

Efforts are underway to clear blockages and restore essential services in affected areas. Officials reported that approximately 350 houses were damaged in a recent storm in Sundargarh.
