The Netherlands has suffered a significant setback as star midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out of Euro 2024 due to an ankle injury. The Dutch soccer association confirmed that the Barcelona player would not be fit for the tournament in Germany, despite efforts to recover.
De Jong's injury comes after a decisive 4-0 victory over Iceland in Rotterdam, where he watched from the bench. Coach Ronald Koeman expressed his frustration, stating, “He won't be fit enough to play at this level for the next three weeks. There's no point keeping him with us.”
AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders filled in for De Jong during the warm-up match, while another midfielder, Teun Koopmeiners, is also in doubt after getting injured during warm-up. The Netherlands, the 1988 European champion, is set to face Poland, France, and Austria in Group D.
