Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen remains unfazed at the prospect of encountering formidable opponents in the early stages of her debut Olympics, emphasizing that she excels under challenging circumstances.
The 27-year-old qualified for the Paris Games in the 50 kg category during the Asian Games in October last year. 'In the Olympics, there is no seeding, no ranking. So, it's all about your luck there. I don't know whom I'll be facing in the first round or in the second round,' Zareen noted in an interaction facilitated by SAI in collaboration with IOA and BFI.
Having won her second World Championships title unseeded in New Delhi after moving down from 52kg to 50kg, Zareen is accustomed to arduous paths. She has competed in notable tournaments since her Olympic qualification, clinching a silver at the Strandja Memorial and a victory at the Elorda Cup.
Despite her rigorous preparations, Zareen admits to feeling nervous, which she views positively. 'As the days are going by I'm getting nervous. It is my thing because when I'm nervous, my body works well and I'm more focused. And also, this is my first Olympics,' she said.
Reflecting on her performance at the Asian Games, where she earned a bronze, Zareen acknowledged learning from her semifinal loss. As she nears the Olympics, she prioritizes mental fitness and avoiding injuries. The boxer expressed gratitude for her transformation from a challenger to a prominent face in Indian boxing, aspiring to win an Olympic medal.
