Veteran cyclist Michael Morkov has withdrawn from the Tour de France ahead of the 12th stage due to a COVID-19 infection, his Astana team announced on Thursday.
The 39-year-old Danish rider tested positive for COVID-19 on both Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
“Despite the rider feeling good and showing no significant symptoms, the medical staff of Astana decided to stop the rider,” Astana stated.
Morkov, who is set to retire at the end of the year, has an accomplished career that includes a stage win in the 2013 Spanish Vuelta and a gold medal in the Madison track race at the Tokyo Olympics. He is also scheduled to compete at the Paris Games.
Stage 12 is a 204-kilometer (126-mile) flat stage from Aurillac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot in southwest France.
