Lotto–Dstny's Victor Campenaerts executed a perfectly timed attack to secure victory in stage 18 of the Tour de France, a challenging 179.5 km stage from Gap to Barcelonnette on Thursday.

Campenaerts, alongside Michal Kwiatkowski and Matteo Vercher, managed a thrilling finish that saw the Belgian cyclist launch a powerful sprint in the closing 200 meters to claim his career-first Tour stage win. Overcome with emotion, he immediately shared the victory with his girlfriend and child via video call.

"I've been dreaming about this for a very, very long time," admitted Campenaerts, fighting back tears. The win followed a tough period, including a prolonged absence of communication from his team on his contract. However, he thanked his pregnant girlfriend for her unyielding support during his training.

In the final kilometers, the trio had built a decisive lead, with Campenaerts biding his time before making his winning move. Kwiatkowski and Vercher were unable to respond, allowing Campenaerts to cross the finish line triumphantly. Jai Hindley and Wout Van Aert led the chasing pack, crossing 22 seconds later, while yellow jersey holder Tadej Pogacar finished 14 minutes behind.

Slovenian Pogacar retains his lead over Jonas Vingegaard by three minutes and 11 seconds as the race heads into the Alps for stage 19, a 145 km ride from Embrun to Isola 2000.
