Simone Biles Leads U.S. Redemption Tour at Paris Olympics

Simone Biles will headline a U.S. gymnastics squad intent on reclaiming their team title at the Paris Olympics and moving past the tumultuous Tokyo Games, as stated by coach Chellsie Memmel on Tuesday.

During the Tokyo Games three years ago, Biles withdrew from several events due to mental health concerns, leading the favored U.S. team to settle for a silver medal behind Russia. Since returning from a two-year hiatus, the 27-year-old gymnast is once again dominating competitions and is in peak mental and physical condition ahead of her third Olympics.

"Simone has been doing great," Memmel, the team's technical lead, remarked. "She's been solid in training since Katy, Texas, and seems to be in a really great place."

Biles, along with returning gymnasts Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and Sunisha Lee, will be joined by 16-year-old first-time Olympian Hezly Rivera. While Biles is the team's clear leader, Memmel emphasizes that the coaching staff is careful not to place excessive expectations on her.

Memmel noted conversations with head coach Cecile Landi regarding Biles' role in team finals, ensuring she has the autonomy to choose her events based on her well-being. The five-person team was selected after a challenging Olympic trials featuring injuries to Skye Blakely, Shilese Jones, and Kayla DiCello, which strengthened the athletes' camaraderie.

"I'm really proud of this team with everything they've gone through, seeing teammates get injured," Memmel said. "I want them to get through this and be happy, healthy, and proud of what they accomplish, regardless of the outcome."

She added, "I want them to look back with pride and say, 'I'm so glad I had this experience.'"
