In a landmark decision, Zimbabwe will be the first team in modern cricket to receive a 'touring fee' from the host nation during their 2025 summer tour of England. This groundbreaking move, confirmed by England and Wales Cricket Board Chief Executive Richard Gould on Sky Sports, was first reported by ESPNCrinfo.
Speaking to former England captain Mike Atherton, Gould emphasized the necessity of ensuring competitiveness in Test cricket among major teams like India, Australia, and England. He pointed out that the traditional model of revenue sharing from the ICC and bilateral cricket is outdated and in need of reform.
Generally, touring teams are only provided accommodation and other facilities, but from next year, Zimbabwe will receive a financial fee. The rising costs of hosting and touring for Test cricket, particularly for smaller nations with limited broadcasting rights, have raised questions about the sustainability of the traditional revenue model. Earlier this year, Cricket West Indies CEO highlighted the broken revenue-sharing system after their costly tours to Australia yielded no financial returns.
Gould expressed empathy towards financially weaker boards like Cricket West Indies and pledged to find ways to support them. He revealed ongoing discussions and additional measures, such as playing extra T20 matches and organizing Under-19 tours, to help these boards stay afloat and develop talent.
