Heart of a Champion: Maggie Steffens Triumphs Amid Personal Tragedy

U.S. water polo captain Maggie Steffens is participating in the Paris Olympics with a heavy heart after her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, passed away just before the Games began.

Lulu Conner, aged 26, died unexpectedly shortly after arriving in Paris to support Steffens in her quest for a fourth consecutive gold medal. The family is still attempting to understand the circumstances, which Steffens described as a “medical emergency.”

Despite her grief, Steffens played a pivotal role, scoring two goals in a comprehensive 15-6 victory over Greece on the first day of the women's tournament. She is the leading scorer in Olympic history with 58 goals. Steffens and her husband, Bobby Conner, are deeply affected, and she has found solace in her team's support during this difficult time, hoping to honor Lulu's memory throughout the Games.
