Olympic Triathlon Postponed Due to Water Quality Concerns in Paris’ Seine River
The men's Olympic triathlon in Paris, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed due to concerns over water quality in the Seine River. Rescheduling is under consideration, with water tests pending. Heavy rains have caused bacterial levels to rise, complicating efforts to ensure athletes' safety.
The men's Olympic triathlon, initially set for Tuesday, has been delayed due to water quality concerns in Paris' Seine River, originally planned for the swimming segment.
Officials are reviewing options to hold the men's triathlon on Wednesday, coinciding with the women's event. Both remain subject to water quality tests, with storm forecasts adding complexity to the rescheduling efforts. Heavy rainfall during the Olympic opening ceremony last Friday and over the weekend has led to increased levels of E. coli bacteria in the river.
Paris has invested €1.4 billion in improving the Seine's water quality, including constructing a basin to manage rainwater and renovating sewer infrastructure. However, test results have continued to show fluctuating bacteria levels, posing risks to athletes. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and other officials even swam in the river recently to demonstrate its safety, yet, E. coli readings have remained above safe limits.
