India's Batting All-Rounders: A New Strategic Surprise in Cricket
Bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule emphasizes that India will continue to provide bowling opportunities to their top-order batters. This strategy, demonstrated in the recent ODI against Sri Lanka, aims to use batters as surprise elements. Despite some setbacks, the approach is seen as beneficial in creating an all-rounder team dynamic.
Bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule indicated that India will continue to give bowling opportunities to their top-order batters as it can work as a “surprise element” against the opposition.
Shubman Gill rolled his arm in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, which ended in a tie on Friday. Despite giving away 14 runs in his over, Bahutule sees this as the way forward.
“I think our batters are good bowlers as well. Their primary skill is batting, so they don’t focus much on bowling, but they have the skills,” said Bahutule post-match. He highlighted how Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka's bowling turned the match around, validating the potential of India's approach.
Bahutule used examples of Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh bowling in T20Is against Sri Lanka to support his point. He believes that having top-order batsmen who can also bowl will be advantageous. “It will be a surprise element to the opposition. Moving ahead, there will be ample opportunities for batters to bowl,” he explained.
He admitted that India could have forged better partnerships after a promising start. Bahutule praised spinners Hasaranga and Asalanka for exploiting the pitch well. He also lamented not capitalizing on Rohit Sharma’s strong start, which set the tone for the innings. Despite a few drawbacks, he commended the overall performance, especially that of the spinners, and saw room for improvement in closing out matches.
