Indian Men's Hockey Team defender Amit Rohidas is set to miss the crucial semifinal clash against Germany following a one-match suspension for his misconduct in the quarterfinal game against Great Britain. Rohidas received a red card in the second quarter after raising his stick and hitting opponent William Calnan on the head, leaving India to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) officially announced Rohidas's one-match ban on account of breaching their Code of Conduct. 'Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4,' read the FIH statement, according to Olympics.com.
The suspension will affect match No. 35, India's semifinal against Germany, where the team will proceed with a squad of 15 players, excluding Rohidas. Known for his dual role in the defense and as the first rusher during penalty corners, Rohidas’s absence will be felt keenly by the Indian team, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh.
In the previous match, the Harmanpreet Singh-led squad overcame Great Britain in a thrilling quarter-final at the Paris Olympics. The match ended in a 1-1 tie after regulation time, but India prevailed with a 4-2 win in the shootout. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh had given India an initial lead by converting a penalty corner in the second quarter, but Britain's Lee Morton equalized before halftime. Despite multiple efforts, Great Britain failed to find the net in the second half, while India succeeded in all four shootout attempts. Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh's crucial save ensured India's advancement to the semifinals.
