Morne Morkel, the former South African pace bowler, has been appointed as the bowling coach for the Indian team, taking over from Paras Mhambrey. The announcement was made on Wednesday as part of a series of changes within the team under new head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah confirmed the appointment to ANI, stating that Morkel was chosen over India and Karnataka bowler Vinay Kumar, who was also in the running for the job. Morkel brings experience from his previous coaching stint with Gambhir during their time at Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a spell with Pakistan's national team.
During his playing career, the 39-year-old Morkel featured prominently in South Africa's formidable pace attack, racking up 309 wickets in 86 Tests, 188 wickets in 117 ODIs, and 47 wickets in 44 T20 Internationals. India's recent series against Sri Lanka saw other coaching appointments, with Gambhir retaining assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip.
