Top tennis player Jannik Sinner tested positive twice for a banned steroid in March but was not suspended after an independent tribunal ruled it was unintentional. Sinner, currently ranked No. 1, continues to compete and is favored for the upcoming US Open.
Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner tested positive twice for a banned anabolic steroid in March and was stripped of prize money and points earned at a tournament in Indian Wells, California. However, he will not be suspended as an independent tribunal determined the violation was unintentional.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the case on Tuesday. Sinner, who recently won the Cincinnati Open, remains among the favorites for the US Open starting next week in New York.
Sinner, who turned 23 on Friday, made his debut at No. 1 in the ATP rankings in June. He continues to be a leading figure in men's tennis, winning the Australian Open in January and reaching semi-finals and quarter-finals in subsequent Grand Slam events this year. The ITIA verified that his positive test results were due to an over-the-counter spray used by a support team member to treat a wound. Sinner was cleared of intentional wrongdoing by an independent panel on August 15.
