As Sri Lanka prepares for their three-match Test series in England, seasoned all-rounder Angelo Mathews is leveraging past experiences to energize his team. Mathews, along with Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne, was part of the squad that clinched a Test series victory in England in 2014. Now, he aims to use those memories to inspire the current squad.
'Yes, absolutely. We've been sharing about 2014 because it gives us hope. We can say, "Yes, we've done it before, and we can do it again,"' Mathews said. Reflecting on his career, Mathews, who has been pivotal for Sri Lanka in all formats, recalled the intense schedule he faced in 2014, leading to injuries but was committed to playing for his country.
Regarding the upcoming series, Mathews expressed his preparation to contribute with the ball, though he admits he isn't fully match-ready yet. 'Since the Lanka Premier League (LPL), I haven't been bowling much. Even in these conditions, it's challenging to just walk in and start bowling. Let's hope I will bowl,' Mathews stated. Mathews also reminisced about his best performances in England, including his crucial wickets in the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2019 ODI World Cup against the West Indies.
