Taylor Fritz overcame a challenging start to ultimately dominate eighth seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday, advancing to the U.S. Open quarter-finals for the second consecutive year.
Ruud initially seemed in control, breaking for a 5-3 lead before clinching the first set. However, Fritz found his rhythm in the second set, capitalizing on Ruud's double fault at set point to level the match. Changing into dry clothes did little to help Ruud regain his form.
Fritz captured the third set and maintained his momentum in the fourth, sealing the match with his 24th ace. This victory marks Fritz's first win against Ruud in their three encounters. Cautiously optimistic, Fritz emphasized focusing on one match at a time.
